Atypical Evening

Sitting alone in the crowd

of a dark and empty bar,

two people see each other

not mattering much to those around.

You and I.

One the spotlighted face on the stage

the other a blank faced chair in the crowd,

            endlessly searching for something

            both of us wanted.

You and I.

The lights went down and still you shone

The lights came up and to you I was known.

How quick the evening goes

            when you’re doing nothing.

You and I.

Later we spoke in endless

            rhymes with no words

and the meaning was lost

in the things we were to do.

My intentions innocent,

            yours not so.

You and I.

We laughed we played

            we danced we lied.

And you were okay

            but I was hurt.
