The Last Single Man on Earth

He walks in among us, oblivious to all;

            seeking nothing, giving nothing.

He thinks about how he looks, forgetful of others;

            hoping to make a good impression; he does.

All around him, single men;

            seeking nothing, giving nothing.

Sometimes he wonders.  He is a wonder;

but not to himself, only to others.

            Helpless, he cries.

He knows about sincerity, he knows about life;

            he’s offering a gift, but no one wants it.

A future of change awaits him – and he hopes

for a love to share it with.

            He wants to give himself, and receive

nothing in return.

            But no one will accept his gift.

Perhaps he’s selfish – perhaps he’s insane;

            seeking nothing; giving all he has.

Loneliness sinks deep within his soul;

            for he is truly alone.

All one,

but not whole without a partner.

                        Quietly he waits, and hopes, and sleeps;

            dark dreams of reality fate into consciousness.

Pleading, he awakes and waits for a love that wants his gift.

            With a tear drop

                        he allows himself to feel

                                    and he knows that out there

Somewhere –

                        someone waits for him.
